My iTalki Review (2026): Is It Really Worth It?

It’s been a few months since I shared my Preply review and during that time, I decided to give iTalki a try as well.

iTalki is also a great platform for learning languages online through real tutors and live conversations.

In fact, many learners consider it an affordable and better than Preply in terms of quality of lessons and value for money.

So in this post, I’ll share my complete iTalki experience and review based on the 1-on-1 lessons and group lessons I personally took.

A quick note before we dive in:

I joined iTalki to improve my English speaking skills…especially fluency, clarity, and confidence. I’m pretty good with written English, but like many learners, I needed more real conversation practice.

Even though I used iTalki for English, this review will still help you regardless of the language you want to learn…

because I’ll focus on the overall experience:

What Is iTalki?

iTalki is an online language-learning platform where you can learn and practice any language by speaking with real tutors through live video lessons.

No pre-recorded lessons or generic exercises…iTalki is all about human-to-human conversation, which makes learning feel more natural and immersive.

Right now, you can find thousands of tutors on it who teach 150+ languages — from popular ones like English, Spanish, French, Japanese, and Chinese to less common languages too.

What I found most interesting about the platform is that they also offer group classes for different topics like Business and Career, Debating, and discussion on many sub-topics led by different tutors worldwide.

My Experience Using iTalki

When I first started searching for 1-on-1 language learning apps, I found dozens of options — Cambly, Preply, iTalki, and many more. I read reviews and tried a few myself.

• Cambly is great for speaking practice with native English speakers only, but it’s quite expensive.

• Preply advertises a lot and has a huge tutor base, but I noticed that some tutors cancel lessons often because there aren’t strict rules in place.

• On the other hand, iTalki has a similar price range to Preply, but stricter tutor policies — including penalties if tutors cancel classes without reason.

(There are more differences between iTalki and Preply which I’ll cover later.)

So yes…I decided to give iTalki a try.

I started looking for English tutors who were:
✔ affordable
✔ clear and confident speakers
✔ available at the times I prefer

Now I’m not going to explain “how to create an account” or “how to apply filters”… those are super basic and you’ll figure them out in a minute once you open the app.

Let me jump straight into my trial and 1:1 lesson experience.

Finding the Right Tutor:

After browsing several tutor profiles and watching their 1–2 minute intro videos, I finally shortlisted a few options. But selecting the right one still took me about 30 minutes.

Why so long?

Because I wanted to try a tutor for only $5 for a 30-minute lesson.

Not because I had low budget…but I wanted to test the platform at the lowest price possible.

After all, I chose iTalki because it’s affordable for 1-on-1 lessons and offers quality training.

With my $5 trial budget, most tutors I found were from India (my home country) or neighboring countries like Nepal. I did find a few good ones within this budget.

But if you want native speakers (US, UK, Australia, etc.), it’s tough to find a quality tutor for only $5. Most good native tutors charge $10 or more per lesson.

My Criteria for Choosing a Tutor

Before booking, I checked:

✅ Quality of intro video — voice, pronunciation, clarity, personality of a tutor
✅ How many lessons they’ve completed + ratings from students
✅ Their regular price (not just trial)
✅ What type of classes they offer

Based on all that, I picked an Indian tutor named Shyam Syangtan for my English fluency practice session. He had trial slots available the same evening — perfect timing after my dinner.

Paying $5 for 30 minutes sounded like a great deal, so I made the payment and booked his lesson.

Joining My First iTalki Class

Five minutes before class, I connected my laptop and headset and waited to join. (You receive all your lesson details via email — including the classroom link after payment.)

One thing I really liked is that iTalki gives you multiple video-call options for 1-on-1 lessons:

• iTalki Classroom
• Google Meet
• Zoom

I first selected iTalki Classroom and started the conversation.

But after around five minutes of technical issues, the tutor messaged me to switch platforms. He quickly shared a Google Meet link, and we moved the class there without any problem.

How the Trial Lesson Went (My Real Experience):

Before joining the class, the tutor also asked me (via chat) on iTalki…that “What would you like to do in the lesson?”

And I replied, “I want to have a practice conversation with you to improve my English speaking and fluency.”

Then, he (tutor) replied with “alright! see you in the lesson!”. He also reminded me half hour before the class.

Once I joined the class, he asked about something about myself – like where am I from, what do I do and why I am learning English speaking.

I also asked him a bit of him, his experience with teaching on iTalki or any other platforms he is offering English tutoring.

It was just a 30-minute trial lesson, but we ended up having a conversation about many random things.

I noticed that I struggled a bit with forming sentences while speaking. Whenever I paused or got stuck, he patiently waited for me to finish my sentences.

The 30 minutes were about to end, our conversation still hadn’t finished. Since the lesson was on Google Meet, the tutor extended the session by an extra 10 minutes.

t the end, he asked if I had any more questions, so I asked him whether he planned to continue teaching on iTalki and what his overall experience has been.

He said, Yes! I’m also learning Chinese and takes lessons on italki himself, so I have no plans to leave.

He said he really likes italki…it’s a great platform and it helps pay his bills. He aims to take around 8–10 lessons per day, which gives him a good earning, so he doesn’t plan to leave the platform anytime soon.

How Is the Teaching Quality on iTalki?

From what I saw in the tutor’s introduction video, his speaking skills matched exactly what I was looking for. I needed someone to practice conversations with so I could improve my communication—and he turned out to be really good at that.

He was a good listener, a clear communicator, and had good command of the language.

I also asked him about the importance of grammar when learning a new language, and his answers were satisfactory.

If I had to rate his teaching quality on iTalki, I’d give him 9/10.

The one point is deducted only because he didn’t always correct me when I made mistakes in my sentence formation.

Now, Let me share my experience with Group lessons on the platform:

Taking Group Lessons on iTalki

If you enjoy learning with others…the Group classes are best for you. iTalki offers group classes on many topics and subject:

• Daily Conversation
• Travel and Global Culture
• Debating and Discussion
• Business and Career
• Language Essential

Whatever topics you’re interested in, you can join group classes offered by different tutors.

The Group lessons lasts for 60 minutes and generally starts with $7 and more than $25, depending upon the class and tutor you choose.

I chose a daily conversation group class by Erica for $10 for 60 minutes. The topic was “How Much Money Do People Actually Save“.

It was a 6 spots/class…and I booked the class one day before when 4 spots were left.

I joined the class on Zoom and it went all good or better than my expectations. As I’m pretty good in savings and investments, so I had many things to put on the table.

If I talk about my overall experience…it was great and satisfactory. Erica the tutor also asks opinions and answers from all people.

Personally, I enjoyed the class and planning to take more group lessons hosted by Erica. If you are learning English and wants to try group class, I’ll definitely recommend her classes.

Now, let’s talk about iTalki pricing…

How Much Does iTalki Cost?

iTalki has different costs for trial classes, tutors rates, group classes, and Plus+ plans…that may confuse you at first. So, let me break down all this.

1. Tutor Hourly Rates

If you visit iTalki, you know its 1:1 lessons costs vary. Each tutor sets their own rate based on experience, qualifications, language demand, and location.

Typical price ranges:

• Community Tutors: $5 to $20 per hour
• Professional Teachers: $10 to $40+ per hour

This price is mostly affected by certifications (TESOL, CELTA, etc.), years of teaching experience, Specialized lessons (business, test prep, interview practice, etc.), and others.

When it comes to pricing, make sure you choose a tutor who matches your learning goals—not just your budget.

Note: Unlike Preply, italki does not offer tutor subscription plans. This means that if you want to stick with one tutor, you’ll need to pay per class each time you book a lesson.

2. Trial Lesson Costs

If you’re a new user on italki and want to take your first lesson, here’s some good news…most italki trial lessons are offered at a much lower cost than regular lessons.

Trial lessons usually range between $5 to $8, and sometimes over $10, depending on the tutor.

Few things to know about iTalki trial lessons:

• Last 30 minutes
• Help you evaluate the tutor’s teaching style and compatibility
• Are cheaper than full-hour lessons
• Can be taken only once per tutor

3. Group Class Pricing

Group classes are hosted by tutors and sometimes more affordable than 1-on-1 lessons.

Typical prices:

• $7 to $15 for most classes
• Some specialized classes may go up to $20–$25

Details:

• Usually 60 minutes
• Class size ranges from 4 to 6 students
• Topics include conversation, culture, debates, pronunciation, business, etc.

4. Subscription vs. Pay-Per-Class

As said before, italki does not use a subscription model.

Instead, it operates on pay-per-class, which means:

• You book only the lessons you want
• You pay per lesson directly to the tutor
• No monthly fee, no commitment, and no auto-renewals
• You can switch tutors anytime

However, you can buy italki credits to make payments easier…but this is not a subscription; it’s just a payment method.

5. iTalki Plus Plan

The iTalki Plus is a a monthly or annul membership that offers extra benefits for students.

While it doesn’t replace regular lesson payments, it provides value-added features with AI assistance such as:

Note: iTalki Plus is optional…but if you take lessons frequently, it can help you save money and get more out of your learning experience.

If you ask for my opinion on the Plus membership, I’d say that if you’re at a beginner or intermediate level in your language-learning journey, it’s worth giving it a try. After all, the cost is reasonable.

iTalki: The Good & The Bad (My Honest Opinion)

Now, let me summarize the main pros and cons I’ve noticed about iTalki…things that are worth considering before you begin your language-learning journey on the platform.

Pros of iTalki:

1. Affordable Trial and Lesson Pricing

• Many tutors offer $5 trial lessons which makes it easy to test the platform.
• Overall pricing is reasonable compared to alternatives like Cambly.

2. High Quality of Tutors

• Large tutor base across 150+ languages.
• Good teaching quality…most tutors I came across were good listener, patient, and a clear communicator.
• Stricter tutor policies than Preply (penalties for cancellations), which improves reliability.

3. Variety of Learning Options

• 1-on-1 classes and group lessons both available.
• Group classes on interesting topics like conversation, business, culture, debates, etc.

4. Flexible Classroom Options

• You can choose between Italki Classroom, Google Meet, or Zoom.
• Easy to switch platforms when technical issues arise.

5. Easy Tutor Selection Experience

• Helpful filters like intro video quality, tutor rating, class type, etc.
• You will be able to find an affordable tutor who matched your preferences.

6. Good Group Lesson Experience

• The group class is well-organized and interactive.
• Tutors engage everyone and encourage participation.
• Class sizes small (4–6 students), making it easier to practice speaking.

7. Transparent Pricing Structure

• Clear distinctions between:
  • Community tutors and professional teachers

Cons of iTalki:

1. Finding the right tutor takes time

For me, It often takes around 15-20 minutes to shortlist and select a suitable tutor because:

• There are too many tutors, which means more profiles to compare.
• This makes the selection process a bit slow and overwhelming, especially for beginners.

2. Difficult to find high-quality native tutors at low trial prices

• Native speakers from the US/UK/Australia (for English classes) rarely offer the $5 trial.
• Good native tutors usually start at $10+ per trial.
  So iTalki is affordable, but not always cheap if someone specifically wants native teachers.

3. Pay-per-class model – no subscription

Although not a major complaint, you noted:

• iTalki has no subscription model (unlike Preply).
• You must pay for each lesson individually, which can feel inconvenient if you always take lessons with the same tutor.

Final Verdict – Is iTalki Worth It for Language Learning?

After using iTalki for several months to improve my English speaking and fluency, I’d say...Yes, iTalki is worth it, especially for learners who want real conversation practice with real tutors.

iTalki delivers on its core promise: human-to-human language learning. There are no pre-recorded lessons or generic exercises…every session is live, personalized, and focused on you and your speaking goals.

That human interaction makes learning feel more natural and effective, especially for speaking and fluency.

What Makes iTalki Worth It:

My experience with both 1-on-1 lessons and group classes was positive overall.

The tutors I chose were engaging, patient, and supportive, and the group class I attended was enjoyable and valuable.

Considerations Before You Jump In

iTalki isn’t perfect…and it’s not always the cheapest option if you want native speakers at the lowest rates.

The platform also doesn’t use monthly subscriptions like some competitors such as Preply does, so you have to pay per lesson.

But once you get past these small downsides, iTalki’s strengths clearly shine through.

If your goal is improving actual spoken language skills through live interaction with real teachers, iTalki is definitely worth trying… and with trial lessons so affordable, you can test it out with minimal risk.

Italki vs. Preply: Which Is Better?

After using both Preply and iTalki for several months, taking multiple 1-on-1 lessons and even group sessions on iTalki, I can confidently say this:

Both platforms are great, but for different reasons:

• Preply is better if you want affordable, flexible, beginner-friendly 1-on-1 lessons and a simple way to find tutors within your budget.
• iTalki is better if you want higher tutor quality, fewer cancellations, and the option to join group classes for more interactive practice.

Overall:

If cost and convenience matter most → Preply.
If reliability, learning quality, and group lessons matter more → iTalki.

My personal winner: iTalki – mainly for its better tutor standards and group class options.
